Just bought a 1995 XJS convertible in great shape with only 36K miles.
This being my first Jag I am just starting.
A few questions to begin

1. what oil is suggested. I have a 69 TR6 which uses 20W50. Are all English vehicles dependent on this viscosity?

2. behind the shifter is a switch with a 'S', 'N' and a one with a slash through it. Unknow the purpose of this.

3. Anyone know a source of an owners manual?

Another question is a good source for parts. I have used TRF and Moss for my TR6 but I do not have a good resource for Jag parts.

John - - I was looking at a document (1994 model year update) yesterday regards something else and saw the switch you mentioned - - there was a picture of the switch having three positions - - the S (sports mode) the N (normal mode) and the slash - - which disables 1st gear - - apparently to reduce the likelihood of spinning wheels when starting off in snow/ice. Cut-n-paste from that document (S-83 ) is below. That switch is suposedly used on the 4 liter straight six - - possibly a previous owner of you car installed it as a replacement part to the original one that might have broken?

XJS 4.0 A4 Electronic
Four-speed Automatic Transmission
Driver selected operating modes
An additional transmission mode, DELETE FIRST, has
been added to the ZF 4HP 24E transmission control for
the XJS. DELETE FIRST provides second gear start-off to
help prevent wheel spin on roads with poor traction. If
DELETE FIRST is selected when the transmission is in
drive, the transmission will momentarily engage first gear
before shifting to second. The instrument pack has indicators
that illuminate if SPORT or DELETE FIRST are
selected.
Gear Selector and Mode Switch
XJS 4.0
A three-way rocker switch for selecting NORMAL, SPORT
or DELETE FIRST mode is mounted on the center console
gear selector bezel.
XJS V12
A two-way rocker switch for selecting NORMAL, or
SPORT mode is mounted on the center console gear selector
bezel.

I use Welsh Enterprises in Stuebenville Ohio a lot. They have a website. I deal with Boone in the parts dept. Good service. Also use Coventry West in Atlanta
