A California car all its life it has essentially no rust. In 1992 it was rebuilt with a non-original engine of the same series and converted from an automatic to a 4 speed all synchro box. It was fitted with a rack and pinion Adwest unit, Wilwood front brakes, it has essentially no rust. I paid $28K for what was a nice driver and then spent about $7K on parts to take care of a myriad of things, doing all my own wrenching. Included were an aluminum radiator, new wiring harnesses, new Vredestein tires, brake and clutch hydraulics overhaul, MotoLita wheel :-) and lots of other smaller things.
I have designed and fitted an uprated heater system that seem to work quite well at least so far in New England as the winter approaches.
The car now runs the way I want and cruises relaxedly at 70 mph and 2500RPM. It easily runs as fast as most cars do on the road today.
I actually prefer to drive it to my 1970 E-Type since it is more comfortable (important as you get older).
Given the low market value of these cars, it really only makes sense I think if the owner does his own work. If I had paid to have all the work done on my car I would have probably totally spent about $50K+ for what is really a nice driver with a 10ft paint job, but not concours.
