O.K. I understand. Not sure why so many other people are keen on replacing their starters with a gear reduced one. It seems like that is a primary objective. I think they may have other engine issues and may be compensating with that gear reduced starter. I have a good original starter from a 1968 XKE that I have had for 32 years, in case any one needs one.

I have come to Jaguars late in life. I have had many, many cars as I leased them for business. I bought a Jag that essentially was aa disaster and scrapped it after a short affair. I bought 6 to replace the scrapped car and have enjoyed the restorations.
All good on my end except for the perpetual bitching of my spouse, who actually hates them due to my dalliance.

I haven't had any issues with the folks at JL, but I must say that the forum software leaves a lot to be desired. Since I came to the Jaguar from MGBs, I am also spoiled by the size and knowledge of the community on the MG Experience, and neither JL nor jaguarforums.com matches it.
As for Gear reduction starters, I just cannot stand the modern high-pitched sound when cranking. I know that they are mechanically superior, but that sound! I had one put on my old Chevy Pickup instead of rebuilding the original, and I have regretted it ever since.
Now, EDIS? Maybe I should do that instead of converting the XJ6's distributor to vac-advance...

Tom, I cannot recommend this modification highly enough! I had a Mallory Unilite on the car, and that was LIGHT-years better than the stock Lucas: the difference between the Mallory and the EDIS was of the same magnitude! Mileage went up, ALL detonation went away, much smoother idle, faster starts, ESPECIALLY from cold, and....best of all, it can be adjusted from a laptop. Really the BEST mod I've ever done to the car, and I'll do the same to my Rover 2000 TC.
As for the starter noise..won't bug me! I'll be happy to take the 25-lb. original out and not have to put it back in! IIRC, the Gunderson starter is somewhere around 9 pounds.
